The Rainbow Tulip is an historical fiction children's picture book by Pat Mora based on the author's mother's experiences growing up as an immigrant child in El Paso, Texas. The main character, Estelita struggles with being comfortable with her Hispanic heritage yet fitting in with the children from main-stream culture at her school. Estelita is bilingual while her parents speak only Spanish. Estelita's thoughts and feelings are in the forefront of this story as she finds comfort with who she is. Source
The pansy is a group of large-flowered hybrid plants cultivated as garden flowers. Pansies are derived from viola species Viola tricolor hybridized with other viola species, these hybrids are referred to as Viola × wittrockiana. The pansy flower is two to three inches in diameter and has two slightly overlapping upper petals, two side petals, and a single bottom petal with a slight beard emanating from the flower's center. The plant may grow to nine inches in height, and prefers sun to varying degrees and well-draining soils. The common names "pansy" and "violet" are often used interchangeably. When a distinction is made, plants considered to be pansies have four petals pointing upwards, and only one pointing down. Violets have three petals pointing up and two pointing down. Thus Viola cornuta is commonly referred to as a pansy. Source
The rainbow rose
is a rose which has had its petals artificially colored. The method exploits
the rose's natural processes by which water is drawn up the stem. By splitting
the stem and dipping each part in different colored water, the colors are drawn
into the petals resulting in a multicolored rose. With these changes to the
rose, it causes them to not live as long as an uncolored rose. Besides roses, other cut flowers like the chrysanthemum,
carnation, hydrangea and some species of orchids can also be colored using the
same method. Source
